The purpose of this thesis is to give a faithful presentation of the historical context, the themes and the historiographical debate of the De institutione musica by Severinus Boethius: a work written by a philosopher for philosophers, which unfortunately nowadays suffers from a certain neglect from the latter. .

The Latin treatise De institutione musica by the Roman philosopher Boethius (written c. 500, translated as Fundamentals of Music) was a touchstone for other writings on music in medieval Europe. Boethius represented Classical authority on music during the Middle Ages, as the Greek writings on which he based his work were not read or translated by …Boethius ' De institutione musica was one of the first musical works to be printed in Venice between the years of 1491 and 1492.
