Elaboration is a cognitive learning strategy that involves any enhancement of information that clarifies or specifies the relationship between information to-be-learned and related information, i.e., a learner’s prior knowledge and experience or contiguously presented information. Before students employ strategies independently, however, they first must have an opportunity to acquire the strategy. Elaborative interrogation is a strategy that not only can be explicitly taught within the classroom (Wood, Fier & Willoughby, 1992), but it is also a strategy that can be independently employed by students.Cognitive strategies are useful tools in assisting students with learning problems. The term "cognitive strategies" in its simplest form is the use of the mind (cognition) to solve a problem or complete a task. Cognitive strategies may also be referred to as procedural facilitators (Bereiter & Scardamalia, 1987), procedural prompts (Rosenshine ...

The levels of processing model (Craik & Lockhart, 1972) focuses on the depth of processing involved in memory, and predicts the deeper information is processed, the longer a memory trace will last. Craik defined depth as: “the meaningfulness extracted from the stimulus rather than in terms of the number of analyses performed upon it.” (1973, p.(September 2015) Elaborative interrogation is a strategy for enhancing memory during the process of learning. In this method, the learner reads the fact-to-be-remembered and generates an explanation for it. The learner uses questions like Why? and How? to understand the meaning of the information.Memory is the set of processes used to encode, store, and retrieve information over different periods of time ( Figure 8.2 ). Figure 8.2 Encoding involves the input of information into the memory system. Storage is the retention of the encoded information.
