I ran across a very inexpensive 1911 online and I know that Rock Island used to be one of the manufacturers of the 1911 during WWII, but I'm not sure if it is a good reliable gun. This competition-grade pistol certainly doesn’t come cheap, but you get a lot for your money. The fixed sights are built for defense, but you’ll probably want an upgraded optic for competition if permitted. The most important machining on a 1911 are the 3 pairs of holes that the trigger group mounts into. 10 lbs of trigger pull means these three holes are so far out of alignment with each other that they have to use massive spring pressure to get the action to move at all. On the other hand, purchasing a cheap (especially a "used") 1911 to use as a learning tool when a good mentor is not readily available can be very helpful. A newbie is less hesitant to "dive in" and experiment than he would be with a more expensive pistol. I purposely bought several brands of cheap 1911s over several years for that reason. ….
