Apr 15, 2019 · People First Language is a movement that came out in the late 1980’s with various advocacy groups. It was a movement that essentially wanted to humanize people with disabilities, so that the mainstream would start to see us as real people. It set out to do so by nudging the mainstream into seeing people, rather than conditions, first. Patel has been doing this work through her company, VocaliD, an AI company that uses patented technology to blend together recorded speech with machine learning to create synthetic voices. In June 2022, VocaliD was acquired by Veritone Inc., an enterprise AI company.
