Or it might just be sticking and finally opens at a much higher temp. But I would also be sure you don't have something plugged or blocked in the coolant system too.

Jun 1, 2015 · I just recently had some overheating issues on my 4wd Tacoma and, after replacing the thermostat, water pump and radiator cap, the truck drives fine WITH JUST TAP WATER IN THE COOLANT SYSTEM (which I will replace with real coolant after I'm done testing) but, when I check the coolant spillover tank right after driving, I see it mildly boiling ... Last week it started overheating. To date I've replaced the thermostat, water pump, coolant reservoir tank cap and serpentine belt. It's still losing coolant from the reservoir. It doesn't have coolant in the oil, so I'm thinking the head gasket is still good, but don't know what else to check. There's no bleeder port for the coolant.3.0 EcoDiesel.
