The study area was located along the Kaw River estuary, southeast of Cayenne, French Guiana (4°47′N, 52°08′W; Fig. 1).This area is subject to the seasonal oscillations of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, and is characterized by a dry season from August to November (about 75 mm per month) and a rainy season from December to July (>300 mm per month).By definition, no river flows upstream because upstream means going in the opposite direction of the river’s current. However, several rivers flow from south to north because the source is in the higher elevation in the south.The river is named after the Kaw People, who lived on its bank. The Kansas River drains approximately 155,690 square kilometers and is a source of drinking water to about 600,000 people living within the drainage basin.
