Materials and methods. The brachidium data in this study included 63 spiriferide brachiopod species recorded in the literature and two spiriferide brachiopod species (Eochoristites neipentaiensis Chu, Reference Chu 1933 and Weiningia ziyunensis Yuan et al., Reference Yuan, Sun, Shen, Xing, Liu, Yang, Qin and Baliński 2019; Fig. 1; Table 1) studied herein. Spirifer is a genus of marine brachiopods belonging to the order Spiriferida and family Spiriferidae. Species belonging to the genus lived from the Middle Ordovician (Sandbian) through to the Late Triassic (Carnian) with a global distribution. They were stationary epifaunal suspension feeders. Brachiopod–brachiopod symbiosis is, however, rare, and where it occurs it is epibiotic (see Sutton 2005 ). We here describe an endosymbiotic relationship involving a strophomenid and spiriferid brachiopod; this is the first report of such a life strategy for a brachiopod, and widens the ecological range known for the group.

Brachiopods are the most abundant fossils in Wisconsin. Most people are not familiar with living brachiopods because modern species inhabit extremely deep regions of the world’s oceans, and their shells are rarely found on modern seashores.
